Gloomy, stormy weather predicted for weekend

HEAVY storms lashed inland areas of the region yesterday as the Bureau of Meteorology predicts a grey and miserable weekend.

Metrologist Rosa Hoff said Middlemount, Clermont and Dysart had copped the edge of a storm cell hovering over Emerald yesterday.

Ms Hoff said the wet and windy weather would continue, particularly in inland areas, later this week.

"We'll see some storms develop inland and a little further south," she said.

Ms Hoff said a westerly system would exacerbate rainfall in the region.

"We're expecting showers and storms to impact inland area," she said.

Ms Hoff said there was a chance the thunderstorms would become more severe.

She said the cloudy skies hovering over Mackay this morning would return later this week.

"They will return on Friday and will be lingering until Sunday," Ms Hoff said.
