When a good deed ends very, very badly ...

AFTER copping more than $3000 in fines and confiscated cash, Helidon man James Reyner Keenan will be more careful to whom he gives a lift in the future.

Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard Keenan, 29, blew a breath/alcohol reading of 0.141 after being pulled over by police on Milne St on April 18.

When pulling out his driver's licence, Keenan was seen to have a $1560 in cash in his wallet which pricked the interest of police.

A subsequent search of his car found a bag in which a number of small plastic bags each containing small amounts of marijuana was found, police prosecutor Senior Constable Natalie Bugden told the court.

Total weight of marijuana found was 72.5g, she said.

Keenan told police he had given some people a lift in his car that day and they had left the bag in his car, she said.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving, possessing a dangerous drug and possessing tainted property.

His solicitor Shane MacDonald told the court his client had no previous history of drug-related offences.

He said his client had a good job with good income and worked six or seven days a week.

His client instructed the bag found in his car was not his but left there, Mr MacDonald submitted.

Magistrate Bruce Schemioneck fined Keenan $1500 with no conviction recorded and ordered he forfeit the $1560 to the Crown.

On the drink-driving offence, Keenan was fined a further $950 and disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for five months.
