Goodes will run back on field for Swans in NAB Cup clash

DUAL Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes is set to make his return from injury for the Sydney Swans in Saturday night's round three NAB Cup clash against the Gold Coast Suns at Blacktown in Sydney.

Goodes, who turned 33 in January, has spent most of the off-season recovering from the injury he sustained in last year's grand final triumph over Hawthorn.

The Swans' co-captain tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his knee, but played out the game.

He was hopeful of playing in a couple of pre-season games before the club's round-one match against Greater Western Sydney and coach John Longmire has confirmed Goodes will play against the Suns, providing he makes it through training this week.

"(Goodes) has been training really well over the last few weeks and will come in and won't play the whole game, but he'll come into the team and certainly will get some quality game time under his belt," he said.

"We just look at Adam and what is the best preparation for him to get him right for round one - if we think he's able to play this week, and is able to play a half this week, then it will be of benefit to him."

Longmire said the Goodes and Rhyce Shaw would headline a host of returning Swans, which could also include Nick Malceski, Shane Mumford, Kieren Jack and Craig Bird.

"We should be getting a few more players back this week," he said.

"Nick Malceski and Craig Bird also need to get through the week training-wise, and Jarrad McVeigh and Ryan O'Keefe didn't play last week, so they'll come back into the team."
