Government 'playing politics' with Inland Rail: Mayor

MAYOR Paul Antonio has used his address at the Transport and Logistics Symposium to slam the Turnbull Government for "playing politics" with the Inland Rail.

Along with talking up Toowoomba's economic prospects around industry and construction, Cr Antonio said he was concerned about the progress of the Inland Rail, which was now behind schedule, according to the latest reports.

"I've been quite distraught about the management and the progress that's been happening in regards to the Inland Rail," he said.

"In recent times, I think the Federal Government has clearly held up the process.

"There's no doubt there is a perfect example of what should be done here when you look at what happened with the Second Range Crossing.

"I would suggest to the Federal Government that it's time that they backed out and stopped playing politics around this and, in fact, got on and built it."

Cr Antonio also argued for private investment in the project, but said the Federal Government certainly needed to put money aside in the budget this coming financial year.

"I hope in the coming Federal Budget we hear the words they're going to build the Inland Rail," he said.
