Government releases a national soils strategy

LAND managers and primary producers now have a national "soils strategy" to guide future research, development and extension on Australian soils, Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce announced on Tuesday.

Releasing the national soils strategy, Mr Joyce also reappointed the country's first Advocate for Soil Health, former Governor-General Michael Jeffrey.

The strategy centres on research about soils to help meet the needs of the agriculture sector.

"It's all about providing better information and tools to our farmers, scientists and policymakers on soil use and management to assist them into the future," Mr Joyce said.

"This strategy is a road map, and 150 different organisations from across Australia will be involved in rolling it out over the next five years."
