Govt intervenes in Jewel development
THE Queensland Government has intervened in proposals to build a $1 billion mega tourist resort on the Gold Coast.
The Jewel development has been approved by the Gold Coast City Council but has attracted various objections.
State Development, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Jeff Seeney has called in the application to decide whether it is of state significance.
Mr Seeney has until August to approve or reject the application but has formed the view the investment is important to the economic wellbeing of Queensland.
"There is a billion-dollar investment at stake here and more than 3000 jobs riding on the outcome - the jobs of the 2500 construction workers and the 670 hospitality staff and other workers, who will build, operate and occupy this development," he said.
The three-tower, 45-level resort is planned for Surfers Paradise.
