Grand final decided in extra time

BASKETBALL: Players rose to the occasion in Kingaroy last night as they played for season honours.

In under-12s the Magic proved too strong for the Pacers to win 20 points to eight.

Coach of the Pacers Dan Peden said he was very proud of the fight his team showed despite the score at full time.

"At the start of the season they were having trouble even getting to the basket and they have improved going to the basket, getting there and on their shooting," he said.

"They have come together as a team and they have done really well."

Player of the final went to Brittni Soutter from the Pacers and Kaseylee Peden and Harvey Sawtell were named the most valuable players of the season.

The atmosphere was electric in the final minutes of the U15 grand finals between the Blazers and Grizzlies with scores drawn at 26 all at full time to force the game into extra time.

Five minutes was added to the clock and the Blazers took the victory 34 to 29.

Coach of the Blazers, Jaxon Walters, was proud of the improvement his team have made over the season.

"We went from barely getting four players here, to the grand final, and to win it we are really happy," he said.

While it was not the result the Grizzlies were hoping for, their coach, Brenda Okesene said the players should be proud of how they played.

"It was a great final and we didn't get the result we wanted but they had fun," she said.

"I said to them, 'even if we lose you know you have given it your best, don't worry about the points'."

Marshall Heard from the Blazers was named the player of the final and the most valuable player of the season went to Reuben Patch.

The Tropics and Rockets met in the U20 match with the Rockets finishing on top 61 points to 46.

It was a great effort for the Tropics to make the final after finishing in fourth place.

Co-ordinator of the U20s fixture Dan Walters said the season was a great success with fierce competition and sportsmanship on display.

"The game was played in good spirits and the season was great with the teams all so close," he said.

Player of the final was Mark Emfaces and the most valuable player of the season went to Lachlan Davies from the Bulls.
