HERVEY Bay Fly and Sport Fishing guide Andrew Chorley has had a close encounter with a 3.5-4m great white shark in waters off the western side of Fraser Island.

Mr Chorley was the guide on a charter in Platypus Bay on Saturday when he spotted the shark at noon in waters just a few metres deep.

He said while other sharks such as tiger, hammerhead and bull, were common in Fraser Coast waters, it was the first great white he had seen.

"It's the first one I've positively identified," Mr Chorley said.

"I've seen some big sharks, I see hundreds every year, but that's the first one I've seen that I can actually say it was a great white."

Mr Chorley said the shark was not aggressive but inquisitive.

"It circled the boat a couple of times just to check us out.

"We filmed it with the GoPro and I had to put my hand in the water about 1m from it, but it was pretty peaceful.

"We followed it for a little while then let it go on its way to do its own thing - we didn't want to harass it.

"Then I saw people swimming in the same spot not long after."

Mr Chorley said the encounter took place about 100m from shore.

He said he saw wakeboarders in the same location the previous day.

Mr Chorley operates guided sportfishing and flyfishing charters in the Fraser Coast. For more information, visit www.herveybaysportfishing.com.au.
