Gumps are no chumps
THE Open Touch Football grand final saw the best of the best go toe to toe.
Heavy rain on Monday night provided intense 40-minute games as sides from all over the South Burnett battled it out.
A-grade teams Nanango Panthers and Kingaroy's Gumps went head to head.
Defence was strong from the Panthers and held for the first half of the game as the Gumps went on full attack.
Nanango Panthers' Ben Dyke scored the first try as he broke through the Gumps' line of defence with swift side-stepping. Knock-ons and slips were frequent throughout the match and the night's rain was shown to be a game changer.
The Gumps' Anthony Eden proved to be a force to be reckoned with as he pierced through Panthers' lines to score multiple tries. However a hard-hitting collision between Eden and fellow Gumps teammate saw one of the fastest players on the paddock sit out for a portion of the game.
Nanango Panthers' Kieran Mangan managed to hit back and bring hope to the team as he bolted through the lines for a try.
A tremendous intercept by Panthers' Matthew Halliday brought the Gumps into dangerous territory. But a great try by Simon Fairbairn saw his team take the lead once more and multiple tries by the Kingaroy team followed.
The lightning-quick offence didn't back down in the second half when Nanango began to tire with their lines broken and their gaps widened
Nanango Panthers saw why the Gumps had gone undefeated all season as their relentless onslaught until the final horn blew had taken the score out to an impressive 8-3.
The Gumps'Anthony Eden said the team's win was an extra highlight.
"It is the team's fourth consecutive win," he said.
"This season we have gone undefeated."
Kingaroy Touch Association president Pat Williams said the night was well run.
"Everybody enjoyed themselves," he said. "All games on the night were played in a good sportsmanship manner.
"We had some local referees as well as invited referees to oversee the games and they were quite happy with the standard of the games."
Senior sign-on will be helo on January 28, 2013.
