Guptill stars again in big win for Kiwis
AN UNBEATEN 93 off just 30 balls by Martin Guptill helped New Zealand thrash Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in their second ODI in Christchurch.
Chasing a meagre 117, Guptill (pictured) reached his 50 off 17 balls, the fastest ODI half-century by a New Zealand batsman, and just one more than the record of 16 balls set by South African star AB de Villiers against the West Indies in Johannesburg in January.
Guptill smashed eight sixes and nine fours, taking 28 off one over from spinner Dushmatha Chameera.
The small target prevented him from having a crack at the world record for the fastest ODI century, also set by Villiers against the West Indies in Johannesburg, off just 31 balls.
"I'd rather take the 90-odd not out than get the fastest 50 and then get out," Guptill said.
Paceman Matt Henry did the damage with the ball, taking 4-33.
