Bid for Red Bull Air Race at Airlie Beach

DELIVERING big dollars and global exposure for the region, John Glanville is rallying hard for a Red Bull Air Race World Championship race at Airlie Beach.

The Greater Whitsunday Alliance chairman wants state election candidates to promise they will rally for a Whitsundays race if they are elected.

It would be the only race in Australia after Western Australia declined to bid to continue hosting the Oceania leg of the tour in 2012.

At the time Western Australian Tourism stated it would have cost taxpayers about $26.5million over three years and returned a benefit to the state of $9.3million.

However Mr Glanville said Airlie Beach's bid had support from State Chief Entrepreneur Steve Baxtor, Whitsunday Mayor Andrew Willcox and Member for Dawson George Christensen.

"We need passionate support from State Government to make this a reality," Mr Glanville said.

"Airlie Beach is the perfect location to host a Red Bull Air Race with several airports close by, convenient access to major service centres in Proserpine and Mackay and of course the stunning natural backdrop of the Whitsundays."

Mr Glanville said that the concept has also gained interest from several cruise companies who are keen to offer a new and different cruise experience for customers.

"Australians love motorsport and the Red Bull Air Race circuit is a new dimension of racing," Mr Glanville said.

"Match that with the idyllic location of the Whitsundays and it's a perfect match.

"We can affordably draw an Australian and international audience here by hosting a Red Bull Air Race and in turn create short and long term economic benefits for our region."
