Happy birthday, Lady Flo
FORMER Queensland Senator and pumpkin scone extraordinaire Lady Florence Bjelke-Petersen celebrates her 97th birthday today.
Son John Bjelke-Petersen said the family would get together at the famous family home of Bethany on Friday night to celebrate.
"Mum's coming home,” Mr Bjelke-Petersen said.
"We're thankful, we've had a lot of calls from various people and we appreciate the kind messages and kind words expressed to mum. We certainly have been blessed and thank God for another year that we've been able to share with the our mother.
"She's certainly left her mark on our community, our state and country through her service over the years.”
Mr Bjelke-Petersen said his mother still volunteered around the community.
"On Wednesday she was down at Canowindra for the church service playing the organ,” he said.
"She's also rostered to play the organ for the church services up at Orana.
"She just needs a lift there these days, that's the only thing that's changed.”
Nanango MP Deb Frecklington, whose seat takes in Joh Bjelke-Petersen's old seat of Barambah, expressed her birthday wishes on Twitter.
"Happy Birthday Lady Flo, a beautiful lady who gave so much to our community,” Mrs Frecklington said.
Lady Flo was born in Brisbane on August 11, 1920 as Florence Isabel Gilmour.
She married Country Party MP Joh Bjelke-Petersen (who went on to become Queensland's longest serving Premier) on May 31 1952, after they met when she was working as a private secretary to the Queensland Commissioner for Main Roads.
She served as a Senator between 1981 and 1993.
From everyone at the South Burnett Times, happy birthday Lady Flo.
