Happy birthday to the Sheik of Scrubby Creek

THE Sheik of Scrubby Creek celebrates his 86th birthday today.

Country singer and guitarist Chad Morgan was born in Wondai on February 11, 1933.

He is renowned for his vaudeville style of comic country and western songs, and goofy stage persona.

His career started when he sang his original song The Sheik of Scrubby Creek at a radio talent contest on Australia's Amateur Hour in 1952.

The Australian country music singer has played with the Slim Dusty Show, John Williamson and Normie Rowe.

Morgan was inducted into the Tamworth Hands of Fame in 1979, the Australian Roll of Renown in 1987 and the Kempsey Living Legend award in 2002.

The country singer was awarded an OAM in 2004, and was the first to be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 CMAA Awards.

He is best known for his songs I'm My Own Grandpa, The Shotgun Wedding, Double Decker Blowflies and There's Life in the Old Dog Yet.

He has platinum and gold album sales and has played at all over Australia from tents, trucks, clubs and pubs to festivals, a circus and the Sydney Opera House.

Morgan has still been performing shows into his mid 80s.
