Hastings Deering redundancies to impact Queensland sites

HASTINGS Deerings is the latest company to announce redundancies that will impact Central Queenslanders, according to a union representative.

The Australian Manufacturers and Workers Union spokesman said 28 people will be made redundant at sites in Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and the Goonyella Mine.

It is believed the announcement is being made this afternoon and talks will start next week.

The union spokesperson said 12 of those jobs would go from Rockhampton.

Further, we understand the review has identified full time positions covered under the Hastings Deering Enterprise Agreement likely to be affected included 9 at Mackay, 4 at Goonyella Riverside Mine, and 3 at Townsville.

A company spokesperson said: "Hastings Deering continues to be affected by the significant downturn in mining and construction industries.  Following a recent review, it has commenced employee consultation to determine the right course of action to achieve further operational efficiencies.

"Consultation will occur with impacted employees, and where possible, these people are being offered roles in other parts of the business.

"The decision to reduce workforce numbers has not been taken lightly and we acknowledge the impact that these changes have on employees, their families and the communities in which they live."
