A HEARTBREAKING announcement during an otherwise lighthearted Aussie TV show came as a massive shock to the households in this week's episode of Gogglebox.

Last Friday's episode of Ten's light entertainment program The Living Room ended with a bombshell, as the show's co-host and resident design guru Barry Du Bois revealed his cancer had returned for a second time.

"It seems that my cancer has come back, reasonably aggressively now ... I have what is regarded as multiple myeloma. We've got a cancer in my body that has created several tumours right through my body," he said.

Du Bois appeared overcome with emotion as his co-hosts Amanda Keller, Chris Brown and Miguel Maestre comforted him.

The Gogglebox households were reduced to tears - and a rare silence - as they watched the news unfold.

"It's very hard for all of them, being such good friends," said Dalton family matriarch Kate, fighting back tears.

"Good on ya mate. Jeez, I didn't know he was crook like that. Good luck to him - I hope he does well," said Keith.

Du Bois, 57, said he was confident "this is just another fight for me that I am quite comfortable I am going to win".

"I've had two cycles of chemo now and all being well, touching wood, at the end of my third cycle what I'm going to do is a stem cell and bone marrow retrieval and prepare for a transplant," he said.

"At Christmas time when we are on holidays I am going to be in an isolation ward with the great people at St Vincent's Hospital under the care of some amazing people and I'm going to have a very strong dose of medicine."

After the segment originally aired on Friday, hundreds of messages of support have flooded in via social media for the Ten host.

Gogglebox premieres each week on Foxtel's The Lifestyle Channel on Wednesdays at 7:30pm, followed by broadcast on Network TEN on Thursdays at 9pm.
