Helping region’s farmers stay on top of their game

SOUTH Burnett farmers understand the importance of taking advantage of the advances in farming technology to get the best results out of their land.

That's according to Ken Mills, owner of Ken Mills Machinery in Kingaroy.

"What we find in the South and North Burnett is there are some very good farmers who keep up with the modern farming techniques and look for the machinery," Mr Mills said.

"They make the best of what opportunities they get and they farm in a way that will allow them to continue farming forever because they don't damage anything."

Mr Mills said there was far more technology available to customers than most people would realise and he warned that if people didn't keep up with technology, they would get left behind.

The biggest change recently has been in land care, with machines and implements now capable of planting a crop with minimum tillage.

"It doesn't require the amount of working up the ground for some crops that it did in the past," Mr Mills said.

"It enables small-crop growers or farmers to get a better result and care for their land, and it keeps their land sustainable."

In addition to giving farmers a helping hand in making a living, Mr Mills said his team also prided themselves on looking after lifestyle farmers with advice on the ideal small tractor or mower to suit their needs.

"Even though it is just a hobby for them, we enjoy dealing with them because our team have experience in recommending and we share the experience with them," Mr Mills said.

The staff pride themselves on understanding life in the South Burnett and knowing the best equipment for different situations, especially with tractor sales manager David Evans being a lifelong resident of the region and having experience in agriculture.

"Because we trade here and live here, we understand the environment (our customers) are working in and we like to work with them so we can get a better understanding of what they need," Mr Mills said.

Mr Mills said he was proud to have created a "one-stop shop" for residents.

"We have all franchises people can choose from," he said.

"We have a Bob Jane T-Marts and machinery business, so our group covers auto machinery and machinery maintenance."

Ken Mills Machinery also offers a mobile service for the convenience of customers.
