SOCCEROOS goalkeeeper Mat Ryan kept a clean sheet as Brighton and Hove Albion defeated Newcastle in the English Premier League.
The Seagulls held on for a 1-0 home win over Newcastle at the Amex Stadium to move up to 13th on the ladder.
Newcastle, which edged Albion to the Championship title last season, had won its previous three games.
The visitors dominated possession and had the better chances but Brighton held on after Israeli international Tomer Hemed hooked the ball in from six yards out for the only goal of the game.
Mikel Merino's volley was pushed wide by Ryan, Joselu twice missed when well placed, and substitute Jonjo Shelvey hit a post direct from a corner.
Watched by a stadium record crowd of 30,468, Chris Hughton's team claimed its second victory of the season following the 3-1 success over West Brom earlier this month.
Brighton plays Arsenal next and former Spurs defender Hughton said the side would be bouyed by this win.
"Psychologically it's important for us,” Hughton said.
"We'll go into the Arsenal game the way we go into every game, looking for a result. But we know it'll be tougher. Anything you can get from that is a bonus.
"If we do things well and to the best of our abilities, we can compete with a group of teams. But we have to play at a good enough level to do that.”
