Police settle in to grind of headless torso investigation

THE Cedar Pocket "headless torso" murder investigation yesterday settled down to the hard grind of back-room police work.

Detectives began the gruelling task of working their way through a vast amount of information gathered in the past 12 days.

"A dedicated incident rook has been set up at Gympie police station, with every available detective from Gympie CIB, along with helpers from elsewhere in the Wide Bay Burnett Region and officers from the Homicide Squad in Brisbane," a spokesman said..

The probe follows the accidental discovery on Thursday night before last of a headless and limbless torso.

The body was severed below the ribs and the arms had been removed below the elbows, in what police believe was a deliberate attempt to make identification harder.

The grim discovery followed a Triple-0 call by passing motorists who had seen a fire burning at the roadside.

Volunteer rural fire fighters discovered the body while extinguishing a grass fire, which detectives believe was connected with the killing.

The body was found only about 2m from the bitumen, a couple of kilometres down Cedar Pocket Rd.

A search with SES volunteers and a Brisbane-based cadaver dog failed to discover any of the missing body parts and at last report, DNA testing was being carried out at in Brisbane.
