Housemate of Jill Meagher killer stopped rape with an axe

A FORMER housemate of the Adrian Ernest Bayley -- the man convicted of murdering Melbourne ABC staffer Jill Meagher -- has told of swinging an axe at Bayley to stop a rape.

Identified only as "Barry", the housemate told Channel 10 when he moved in, he didn't realise Bayley was at that stage on parole for five rapes.

Bayley appeared to be an average guy who was "professional, clean and tidy", he said.

But he recalled the day he heard a women's scream for help coming from the next room, forcing him into action.

"(I) ran in there with an axe, swung it at him," Barry told Channel Ten.

"My intention was never to hurt him, just wanted to scare him.

"He cowered in the corner like a little mouse."

Barry said he took her to the police station, but at the last moment she decided not to push ahead.

"I put her in my car, we drove to the police station and just as we were about to walk in, she didn't want to do it.

"She didn't want to press charges."

According to Barry's claim, the attempted rape occurred about eight months before Bayley raped and murdered Ms Meagher in a Melbourne laneway in 2012.

Barry said Bayley had once bragged about the girls he had had sex with in St Kilda.

These exploits were all rape attacks.
