South Burnett has one of the country's poorest postcodes

THE South Burnett is home to some of Australia's lowest-earning residents.

This is according to data from the Australian Taxation Office, based on information reported in the 2016-17 tax returns.

Residents at Mondure and Marshlands reported the second-lowest average taxable income in Australia at $23,225, as part of the 4611 postcode.

This is $207,105 less than residents in Sydney's Palm Beach area who had the highest-earning taxable income in the country.

Residents in Cooyar and Upper Cooyar Creek with the 4402 postcode were recognised as the 10th-lowest earning in Australia, with an average taxable income of $29,891.

The NSW postcode of 2308, which includes Newcastle University, had the lowest average taxable income - $2636 less than Mondure's.

Queensland postcodes make up five of the lowest 10 taxable incomes in Australia, while no Queensland postcodes are in the top 10 earning postcodes in the country. NSW and Victoria areas take out the top 10 places.
