Hundreds feared to have died in capsize on Chinese river

RESCUERS have pulled a few survivors from an overturned ferry in China's Yangtze River, but it is feared most of the 458 aboard have perished.

State-run media said at least 12 people had been confirmed dead and 14 rescued - some of whom had been reached by cutting though the hull.

Hundreds of rescue workers and dozens of divers have been hampered by poor weather, strong currents and murky water.

Many on board were reportedly elderly tourists.

The ship capsized during a freak tornado on Monday night, Chinese media reported.
