Hung denied bail ahead of manslaughter trial

A MAN facing a manslaughter trial for delivering one punch that led to the death of a young Broncos player has been denied bail.

Wally James Hung, 24, was granted a re-trial last year after the Court of Appeal dismissed his manslaughter conviction.

A jury earlier found him guilty of punching Bribie Island 22-year-old Todd Parnell at a clubhouse bar in 2009.

Parnell later died in hospital.

Hung was found guilty of manslaughter.

Hung, through defence barrister James Godbolt, made an application for bail in the Supreme Court on Thursday ahead of his manslaughter trial in April.

The court heard Hung was on bail for the alleged fatal punch in 2011 when he became intoxicated and punched his flatmate once in the head at his Beerwah home.

Hung was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Justice Jean Dalton said she was concerned about Hung reoffending if he was released on bail pending his trial.

She said if the assault offence Hung had committed on bail was anything else she would not hesitate in granting him bail.

"The thing that bothers me most is that on bail for a murder charge resulting from one punch to the head while drunk he punches someone else to the head while drunk," she said.

"Had the offence been anything but which it was I think I would grant bail without hesitation."

Justice Dalton said although she found it difficult, it convinced her against granting bail.

Hung's application was dismissed.
