'I love Parkrun': Nanango community celebrates first Parkrun
NANANGO residents made history on Saturday morning as the first participants of the Ros Gregor Trail Parkrun alongside running enthusiasts from the South Burnett, Brisbane and Toowoomba.
Seeing everyone come together and enjoying the event was a proud moment for organiser and run director Therese Woodward.
"I am really excited and really pleased that it has all come to fruition because it was a long journey,” she said.
"I am really happy with the support from other clubs as well as locals this morning.”
Local Matthew Rankin was the first runner across the line and is looking forward to adding the event into his training to prepare for upcoming races.
"It is really good to have time trials here before I do a big race to see how I am going for fitness and time,” he said.
Rankin, who also holds the men's course record in Wondai, said the Nanango event proved to be a challenge as well as fast.
"It wasn't completely flat which was good so I can get some hills in, but I did a PB compared to the Wondai Parkrun even though it is hillier so I am happy with that,” he said.
While many Parkrun fans were keen to check out the new event it was the first time volunteer Tracy Clark had been involved in the worldwide phenomenon.
"I love it, and I am happy to help because I like volunteering,” she said.
"It is for all ages and all abilities and I think it is a really great idea. I have a son with a disability who is doing a lot of exercise so is going to put this in once we gets fitter.”
To ensure the success of the inaugural event Wondai Parkrun organiser Ros Heit on hand.
"It is fantastic, I love Parkrun,” she said.
"Wondai has been going for three years with fantastic success and I am really happy that we can multiply the joy,” she said.
Heit said the location in Nanango provided a great opportunity for runners in Yarraman and a choice for Kingaroy residents while Wondai closer to those in Murgon and Goomeri.
The Ros Gregor Trail Parkrun will be held at 7am every Saturday.
