ONE of the most successful sailors in Sydney to Hobart yacht race history, Ludde Ingvall, will miss this year's classic.

The skipper of the 100-footer CQS won the line honours race in 2000 and 2004.

A change to world race scheduling will keep Ingvall and his supermaxi out of this year's race.

Ingvall and his sponsor Sir Michael Hintze will contest the Middle Sea race this month from Malta and then the Trans-Atlantic race from Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, to Grenada's Port Louis, in November.

"It is regrettable that we have had to pull out of the Hobart, but this is also a great opportunity for us to put CQS through her paces in this long distance race over such a well-known route," Hintze said

Ingvall has had his share of dramas in the annual Australian classic.

In 2001 Ingvall's yacht Nicorette was caught in the centre of a violent and destructive twister off Wollongong that caused millions of dollars of damage to the Sydney to Hobart fleet.

In 2010 a violent storm ended Ingvall's race when two crew were washed overboard before being safely recovered and a hole was punched in the YuuZoo's hull letting in 1500 litres of water.

Last year CQS stole the show at the December 26 start of the Sydney to Hobart before the fleet had even passed Sydney Heads.

The radical yacht crash tacked on the harbour, stalled her engine and went over on her side briefly.
