International students, tourism could benefit Qld: Newman

INTERNATIONAL students could prove a lucrative market for Queensland, the Queensland Premier has learned after a trade mission to Asia.

Campbell Newman said the surprising amount of interest in the education and training sector was so high there were already plans to send Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek to visit countries throughout the Middle East and Asia to capitalise on the great demand.

He said Queensland was also on the cusp of another investment boom in tourism from our Asian neighbours.

Mr Newman pointed to a $40-$50 million refurbishment of the Hayman Island Resort, refurbishment of the Laguna Resort at Airlie Beach, a $250 million makeover of the Capricorn Iwasaki Resort at Yeppoon and $300 million investment at a resort near Coolum on the Sunshine Coast for a 4-5 star resort with a residential component.

He said figures showing a 32% spike in Chinese visitors had fuelled confidence among tourism operators while signs of resurgence in Japan meant there were realistic expectations of a prolonged period of sustained growth for the Queensland mining sector.

"There was a real recognition in the countries we visited that Queensland's economy had matured and was no longer solely dependent on beef and coal exports," he said.

"We were able to generate a great deal of interest in the industries associated with Queensland's four economic pillars of resources, agriculture, construction and tourism, but also in the fields of education and training, infrastructure, and science."
