Man jailed after beating teenage sister cradling baby

A 17-year-old man who attacked his sister as she cradled her baby, punching her in the face and pinning her to the ground, will serve his one month jail term in an adult prison.

The Cherbourg man appeared in Murgon Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Wayne Bushell said neighbours of the 15-year-old victim phoned 000 just after 9pm on June 9, when they heard a woman screaming for help.

"The brother arrived with another person. They were drunk and they were acting silly, they had alcohol with them," he said.

The man said words to the baby that caused concern to the child's mother and she took her daughter away from him.

While the woman held her baby in her arms, her brother started punching her in the face and when she ran and fell. He leapt on top of her and continued to beat her in what Sgt Bushell said was a sustained attack.

"While the defendant is still obviously very young at 17, his history of violence is certainly concerning," Sgt Bushell said.

"Within a 12 month period, this is his fourth bodily harm charge."

Defence solicitor Tim Campion said the man "lost his cool" because he was drunk.

"Because of a bad family background where there has been substance abuse he also abuses substances," he said.

"Behind that is the core of his offending."

Magistrate Simon Young sentenced the man to one month in prison and two years on probation for the assault, failing to appear in court and breaching orders.
