Janice can park the car and enjoy The Broom

AFTER seeing thousands of cars drive out of Johnno's Quality Cars in Maclean, Janice Battersby is jumping in a car and driving herself out of the business tomorrow.

Mrs Battersby was principal dealer for 14-and-a-half years after she took the business over from her father Johnno Johnson.

She said a combination of the availability of used cars on the internet and wanting to live life for living instead of work, planted the seed to retire a few months ago.

"I've always enjoyed the business side of things when people would come in and ask to speak to the owner, expecting it to be a male," Mrs Battersby said.

"It has been an advantage to be a woman in a male-dominated industry.

"I find male salesmen can be pushy, but I'm more laid back.

"However, I'm a little more emotional than a guy, which can be a disadvantage. I don't have a thick skin and I'm not as tough."

She said a really nice customer base was one of the best parts of the job.

First-time customer Fred Sales bought the first car Mrs Battersby ever sold, an EF Falcon, and it is still running as good as ever.

"I rang her up and Janice said she can still remember me, probably because I'm a cheeky old bugger," Mr Sales said.

Mrs Battersby said she timed her retirement perfectly with Christmas.

Her family usually camped at Brooms Head and she would drive into work every day.

But this Christmas would be all about relaxing.

Over the years, the biggest change in cars has been that they are all computerised.

If there is something that stayed the same, it is car prices. "Car prices haven't gone up in 10 years, which is good for everyone."
