Jetty Beach closed after shark sighting

JETTY Beach has been closed to swimmers after a shark was spotted swimming near the end of the jetty this afternoon.

The beach was closed and warning signs posted at its access points after Water Police confirmed the sighting at 1.40pm.

The beach will remain closed for the rest of the afternoon and lifeguards will determine whether to reopen the beach at 9am tomorrow.

Today's incident comes after recent shark sightings on Northern Rivers beaches.

Coffs Harbour City Council lifeguard Sonny Tisdell said that while sightings may have increased, the prevalence of sharks had not.

"I have no doubt that they're in there, swimming about in the ocean," he said.

"It's actually spotting them that's less common.

"But I think with all the stories in the media, there are just more people on the lookout."

The sighting at Jetty Beach comes a day after leading shark researchers met in Sydney for an international shark summit.

NSW premier Mike Baird said following the summit, new deterrent and detection technologies would be trialled on beaches across the state.

He said shark culls would be avoided as data presented at the summit proved it was an ineffective way to prevent shark attacks.

"As much as I understand the community's desire to see swift action, we need to implement measures that actually work," he said.

"Culling, according to the experts, doesn't work."
