Deb ruled out after McVeigh makes tilt at Federal seat
UPDATE: Nanango MP Deb Frecklington has ruled out running for the Federal seat of Groom.
The popular Kingaroy-based politician said she wouldn't be adding her name to the nominees, after leaving her thoughts open on the matter last week, saying at the time it was not something she had considered.
"I won't be running," she said.
The LNP is calling for nominations from candidates in the seats of Groom and Wide Bay, with the party also replacing retiring deputy prime minister Warren Truss.
Member for Groom Ian Macfarlane said he would stay out of speculation on who he would like to see replace him.
Nominations close at 5pm on Monday, March 7.
Prospective candidates should email firstname.lastname@example.org for phone 3844 0666.
EARLIER: Toowoomba politician John McVeigh has confirmed he's making a tilt for the Federal seat of Groom.
The Chronicle reported that Mr McVeigh, who succeeded Mike Horan at the 2012 state election for the seat of Toowoomba South, would put his hand up for the seat.
LNP sources told The Chronicle on Wednesday that Mr McVeigh wanted to replace Macfarlane as the Member for Groom.
Now he's made his position, and his ambitions, clear.
"Now that the LNP has opened nominations today I can confirm that following discussions with local LNP Party representatives, colleagues and my family, that I will be seeking LNP preselection for the Federal seat of Groom," he said.
Should John McVeigh run for the seat of Groom?
This poll ended on 23 March 2016.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
Mr McVeigh said he had received numerous calls asking him to consider nominating for the role since the announcement last week that Mr Macfarlane would not contest the next election.
He said LNP requirements precluded him from making further comments.
If Mr McVeigh is preselected that would necessitate a by-election for the safe LNP seat of Toowoomba South.
The next Federal election must be held on or before 14 January next year.
