Juniors to take on triathlon at Causeway Lake
TRIATHLON: Swim, ride, run and have lots of fun.
That is how Fitzroy Frogs president Craig McCormack is promoting the club’s upcoming junior event.
The under-15 triathlon will be held on Sunday, December 8, at the Causeway Lake on the Capricorn Coast.
There will be three events – 14 and under (100m swim, 1km ride, 500m run), ages seven to 14 (100m swim, 3km ride, 1km run) and ages 10 to 14 (200m swim, 6km ride, 1.5km run).
McCormack said The Causeway was an ideal venue for a junior event.
“The course we have is very safe for the competitors and will hopefully have as little impact as possible on the neighbouring community,” he said.
“Some of the residents in the area will be affected by road closures but we’re making as many provisions as we can for local traffic.
“We are grateful for the community’s understanding and co-operation, and we would encourage the residents of Mulambin to enter their kids in the event.”
McCormack said the junior triathlon had been designed to be as inclusive as possible, appreciative that confidence was more a factor than age.
“Two of the events have a minimum age based on Triathlon Australia race guidelines, but some of the older kids might want to do the shorter events so we are keeping that option open and will finalise the event timing when we see how registrations unfold.”
McCormack would love to see 150 young athletes on the course.
“We need people to register because it really is a bit of an unknown,” he said.
“Kids don’t need to be proficient in all three legs. We just want them to get excited about doing something fun and energetic.
“Whether they go on to be triathletes or not, we’re keen to instil in them an appreciation of doing something active.”
McCormack said what he had noticed in the early registrations was the number of siblings getting involved.
“We’re getting a lot of family interest, which is nice,” he said.
“While it is the kids who are participating, it is the mums and dads and grandparents who will really help make this event special.
“We want them out on course, cheering and encouraging the youngsters and helping create a great atmosphere.”
Entry is $10 and spaces are limited. Go to fitzroyfrogs.net for more information and to register online.
