Justin Bieber is staying on the Sunshine Coast

JUSTIN Bieber bypassed the Gold Coast to stay on a heart-shaped island on the Sunshine Coast after a last-minute change of plan.

Called Makepeace Island, the exclusive, luxurious hideaway is co-owned by Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Australia co-founder Brett Godfrey.

Bieber posted a video of himself playing chess with a member of his entourage on Makepeace Island earlier today.

"Ready to get your ass whooped bro? Ready to get your ass slapped," Bieber says to his opponent in the video.

The singer was due at Suncorp Stadium, in Brisbane, earlier this afternoon for a soundcheck before he takes the stage around 8.15pm tonight for the only Queensland show on his current Purpose World Tour.

The 23-year-old star is reportedly eager to explore the Sunshine Coast on two wheels before he heads to Sydney for the final date on the Australian leg of his Purpose World Tour at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday.

Bieber will fly to New Zealand at the end of the week to play Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday.

The controversial Canadian singer had been scheduled to fly into the Gold Coast yesterday, with his management reportedly putting several luxury properties on hold for him to choose from.

However, Bieber had other ideas.

After spending the day in Melbourne, the star flew into Brisbane on his private jet last night where a car was waiting for him on the tarmac.

The singer stopped and wound down his window for a quick chat with a small group of fans before he was whisked up the Bruce Highway to his Sunshine Coast hideaway.

Nestled in coastal wilderness a few minutes upstream from Noosa Heads, Makepeace Island is a unique retreat able to accommodate and entertain up to 20 'castaways'.

Sure to float Bieber's boat, the 25-acre island includes an indoor bar designed for entertaining on a grand scale and a riverboat to transfer guests to and from nearby attractions.

The property's five-star facilities include a two-storey open-aired Balinese Wantilan, a 500,000 litre lagoon pool, full sized tennis court and pavilion, spa, theatre and office facilities.

Branson and Godfrey refurbished Makepeace Island as a private retreat for family and friends in 2009 before opening the property up for exclusive use hire in 2011.

Named after a colourful former resident - Hannah "Shotgun" Makepeace - the island is decorated with giant sculptures, teak, granite and stone finishes, volcanic boulder bathtubs and ornamental lighting.

Its high-flying owners commissioned and acquired antiquities and furniture in Bali, Java and throughout Indonesia to add to the property's relaxed resort vibe.
