KEEP COOL WARWICK: Temperatures set to hit 40 today

UPDATE: Warwick residents have crammed into the air-conditioned comfort of Rose City Shoppingworld today as the city swelters under heatwave conditions.

At midday the mercury was nudging 39 degrees and is currently sitting on 36.5 degrees in town.

The Uber markets saw quieter crowds as potential market-goers stayed away in fear of melting.

At the Emergency Services Day at the Warwick Fire Station, kids took the golden opportunity to cool down under the massive spray from a telescopic aerial firefighting unit from Toowoomba.

Looking around the south east, Gatton reached a sweltering 41.5 degrees, Amberley hit 38 and Oakey and Wellcamp Airport both reached 38.5 degrees.

EARLIER: WARWICK is set to sizzle today as temperatures soar to near-severe heatwave conditions.

At 8.30am it was already 28.1 degrees and the temperature is forecast to keep on climbing, with an expected top around 40 degrees this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a slight chance of some relief later in the days, with a shower or thunderstorm possible.

Weather conditions aren't forecast to change until early next week, when temperatures start to slide back to a slightly more comfortable level.

Warnings are in place state-wide as fears mount for the elderly and family pets, who may struggle to cope with the soaring summer temperatures.
