WORKERS who have to put in shifts during the Christmas period have been urged to keep an eye on their pay cheques, to ensure they are paid the full rate and entitlements for their work.
Workplace Minister Bill Shorten said employees and employers should contact the Fair Work Ombudsman if they had any doubt about the rates or entitlements during the Christmas-New Year period.
"As Christmas approaches and businesses stay open for longer it's important that Australian workers receive the right rates of pay and entitlements," Mr Shorten said.
"Often, the people who work these less family friendly hours are among the lowest paid. In particular, for workers in the retail and hospitality industries penalty rates comprise a significant proportion of their take home pay."
Mr Shorten said workers and employers should ensure employees got the extra benefits of working the holiday period; such as penalty rates, late night rates and weekend and public holiday benefits.
And in preparation for the holiday period, the Fair Work Ombudsman had updated its website with the latest information about penalty rates in every state and territory.
Last financial year, the Ombudsman investigated more than 800 complaints about underpayment of public holiday rates, recovering thousands of dollars for workers.
