Kingaroy student whips up a junior title
A KINGAROY school student took out the junior whip cracking titles at the Clifton show on February 12.
St Mary's Catholic College student Isla Airs won the first novice, first junior and junior champion titles at the event.
The 14-year-old said it felt great to win.
"It was really good, I was really surprised,” she said.
"It was 42 degrees on the day, it was really hot and challenging.”
The year 9 student said she started whip cracking a few years ago.
"My dad bought me a whip for Christmas one year and all my other friends were starting to whip crack,” she said.
"Now I practise all the time.
"I practise most afternoons leading up to an event, but usually once or twice a week any other time.”
Isla said quite a bit of work went into creating competition entries.
"I usually start off by thinking of tricks to do, I make a list them then I practice them,” she said.
"They're the tricks I'll do at a competition.
"I started putting my tricks together a couple of weeks before Christmas.
"I really wanted to have a good shot at doing well.”
Isla said her aim was to travel to Sydney to perform at the National Whip Cracking titles.
