Kingaroy Wests score season honours

FOOTBALL: The Kingaroy Wests have etched their name onto the Football South Burnett men's trophy for the 2018 season.

The Wests defeated the Barambah Bears two goals to one at Kingaroy's Tom Alford Oval on Saturday to take home season honours.

Steven Wheeler and Thomas Carroll sealed the win for the Wests with one goal each.

Mark Denman from the Wests said the team were happy to take out the competition backing up their president cups win this season.

"It feels great to take the win,” he said.

"It was an ugly win, we didn't play the best in the second half and we just held on tight because we knew we had the lead.

"It was a good fight by both teams the whole way through so I am really proud that we got the win.”

Denman said the team have improved throughout the season with game time proving to be invaluable to the team.

"In the beginning of the year we were giving away easy goals whereas this time we didn't give away easy goals,” he said.

"There is a core of guys that are in Year 11 and may not be around next year so it was a bit of a last hurrah from those guys.”

Denman credited the Bears for the fight they have showed through the season.

"A big shout out to Barambah they fought hard all year, especially when they started with nine guys most weeks,” he said.

The Bears challenged the Wests right up until full time and captain of the Bears, Pacey Clegg, said that is all anyone could ask for from the team.

"I feel like we definitely dominated the first half, we had control most of the game. We sunk the first won and it was a good feeling thinking that we could definitely win it from here and then they just had that lucky one where it bounced over our keepers head. It is not his fault it is just that the wind played a major factor in that game,” he said.

"In the second half we probably were a bit down but we pushed and that's all you can ask for.”
