Kingaroy's newest business owner swapping money for dough

ACCOUNTANT assistant Debbie Ovens knows a thing or two about managing money.

But she is working with a different type of dough now.

After more than 20 years' experience in accountancy firms, Ms Ovens has opened the door on a whole new world.

With a surname like Ovens, it seems Debbie was always destined for a career in cooking.

Cooking pizzas to be precise.

Ms Ovens is the proud new owner of Kingaroy pizza business, Aussies Pizza.

Previous owner Dianne Smith had the business on the market for a while and it had gotten to the point that if she didn't find a buyer, she was going to have to close the doors for good.

But Ms Ovens had other ideas.

"I love the product and couldn't see it die,” she said.

Her first official shift in the Kingaroy St business was on Tuesday, July 16.

She assured loyal Aussies Pizza customers that there wouldn't be any major changes to the fast-food business initially.

"At this point we are just getting a handle on the business and making pizzas,” she said.

"Eventually we can build the business and make it bigger.”

Ms Ovens said she saw a lot of potential in the popular take-away business that has already been serving the community for more than 14 years.

"We have been here for the last two weeks working in the background, learning the trade,” she said.

"It's eye-opening just how busy it can get in a short amount of time.”

As if her hands weren't full enough, the new pizza business owner is also the head coach of the Kingaroy Gunners men's soccer team.

"I have had to shelve the commitments. I will try to get back once the business is up and running,” she said.

As an assistant at Kingaroy Accounting and Tax, Ms Ovens is under no illusions of the challenge she has ahead of her.

"With my background I have seen a lot of good stuff and bad stuff,” she said.
