Kohler combination set to wreak havoc at Qld Country champs
NORTH Queensland will unleash the dreaded Kohler combination on its unsuspecting southern rivals when the Queensland Country Championships begin in Cairns this week.
Norths' pace tandem of Lane and Mason Kohler will combine for the first time in an Open NQ line-up when they steam in against South Queensland in the T20 opener on Friday.
The lifelong brothers and longtime teammates have previously played together for NQ in the Under-21 system but never for the Open side, until now.
Lane, who turned 21 on Sunday, was named to his first NQ Open team after impressing for Mackay in the recent North Queensland Championships.
The younger Kohler brother said Mason, 23, had "been in the Open team for a few years" and welcomed the opportunity to pull on the NQ whites with his longest serving teammate.
"It's actually a bit of a relief," Lane said.
"When our names were getting called out mine was first and I was a bit worried I took his spot.
"We played together in New Zealand that year we went for U21s. It will be interesting to see how we go in Opens together."
Mackay batsmen know too well the threat the Kohler brothers pose.
Lane said he never gets stick of playing in the same side as his brother, though others might.
"I think we do better when we're together in the same team," he said.
"I think people get sick of us being together though.
"We both come in from the same end, so once they get rid of one of us they have to face the other one."
The pair will step off the plane and head straight to the ground on Friday to begin their three-day Queensland Country Championships campaign.
The opening match is a T20, followed by one-day matches on the Saturday and Sunday.
"I feel we've got a pretty decent side," Lane said, citing some handy CQ inclusions.
"There's also a couple of Cairns boys there who are pretty good bats.
"I think we're in with a good chance of taking home the title again."
A Queensland Country Brahmans team will be named at the conclusion of the championships.
