Kyrgios slams umpire during Marseille defeat

TENNIS: Nick Kyrgios' Marseille Open title defence is over and he went down whining in a tough three-set battle with in-form Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals.

The fiery Aussie was left fuming after he was refused a challenge on a Tsonga serve when the chair umpire ruled he was too late in making the call for a referral.

"I've seen referees wait 5-6 seconds after the ball's gone out," Kyrgios said.

"For them it's ok but when I do it once it's not ok.

"You guys are biased as s**."

The unpredictable Aussie star fought back strongly in the second set - and did pull off some typically inspired play including one piece of magic at the net - but was eventually bundled out 7-6 (7-5) 2-6 6-4.

Tsonga claimed his first title since 2015 last week in Rotterdam and maintained his streak of hot form.

His victory set up an all-French final against Lucas Pouille.

Second seed Tsonga lost his way in the second set against Kyrgios but recovered to break once in the decider.

The 31-year-old saved five of eight break points and had to prevail in the face of 16 aces from Kyrgios to win their first meeting and give himself the chance of a third Marseille crown after his victories in 2009 and 2013.

"I'm on top form right now so let's see," Tsonga said.

"I did what I had to do, it was great tennis."
