Damage worse from second fire for Rockhampton Lifeline

FOR the second time in 12 months, the selfless volunteers at Lifeline Berserker have been left picking up the pieces.

Just before 11pm on Sunday, emergency crews were called to the charity store on the corner of Ford and Clifton Sts following reports of a blaze.

Witness Scott Cooper said he was finishing work when he noticed smoke billowing from the building.

"I saw the smoke as I was turning from Ford St onto Clifton St," Mr Cooper said.

"I turned left instead of right and saw the fire, then called 000.

"It was very quiet except for the fire. It would have been kids as there is always kids running around Berserker late at night."

When emergency crews arrived, a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said three fire crews found part of the building engulfed in flames.

While crews made quick work of extinguishing the fire, the aftermath will have a lasting effect on Lifeline volunteers and the wider community.

On April 19, Lifeline Berserker had to take half a tonne of donations to the dump after arsonists set fire to the charity bins outside the store.

About a third of the store suffered damage, while most of the store was covered in soot from the smoke.

The QFES spokesman said the damage was worse this time around.

"The building was alight this time. There is a bit of damage and extensive smoke damage."

Rockhampton City Patrol Group Inspector Adam Muir said police were undertaking further inquiries in the area.

Insp Muir also confirmed the offender responsible for the fire at the business in April, a 12-year-old, was caught and dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.

Police urge anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour around the Ford St area about 10.30pm to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
