The rise and fall of Julia Gillard: memoir is on the way

IN the grand tradition of former prime ministers, Julia Gillard will publish her political memoirs next year through Random House.

Ms Gillard was in the United States on Wednesday for Bill Clinton's Clinton Global Initiative meeting, after revealing the coming memoirs.

Publisher Random House revealed the former PM planned to write, in her own words, her rise and fall from the top political office in the country.

She said while it would cover aspects of her personal story, it would not be a straight autobiography from her birth.

Ms Gillard also gave her first television interview since the election while in the US.

She said there was "still some way to go" in getting women elected to higher offices, and a difficult part of her prime ministership was dealing with image issues "things men don't have to deal with".

Ms Gillard, who recently took as academic post at the University of Adelaide, said the hardest thing about the top job was being focused on the "long term things that matter".

"You could spend your day getting through the most urgent things," she said.

"It's carving out the time necessary to do the long term things, rather than just feeding the media cycle."
