STEVEN Bunter insists he's just an amateur photographer.

But his lack of experience didn't stop his photograph being picked for the front cover of the Sky News Weather Calendar for 2014.

Mr Bunter, from Wellcamp, captured the image of dark storm clouds gathering over a Crows Nest hill largely by chance.

He said after spotting the storm, he decided to get a little closer with his camera.

"I saw the opportunity and followed it out. I'm not a storm chaser or anything, I just like photography.

"I stopped at this little house between Goombungee and Crows Nest and all of a sudden the sun came up behind me.

"It was just the right time, right place."

Toowoomba photographer Grant Rolph's stunning image of lightning starting a fire at Cecil Plains was also chosen for the calendar.

Mr Bunter said he had fully expected Mr Rolph's image to beat his own photo.

"I don't usually enter any competition, because I'm sort of a bit shy," he said.

"I thought he was going to take it out for sure - he's really good at what he does.

"It'll probably never happen again, but I was pretty happy."
