Lily makes it home from hospital in time for Christmas

THE Agnew family were confronting the prospect of a Christmas Day at a Nambour Hospital ward on Christmas Eve, after 14-year-old Lily contracted an infection in her spleen.

But Lily's doctor gave her the "best present" when he sent her home in time to enjoy Christmas lunch with her extended family yesterday, the Moffat Beach teen said.

Lily had her appendix removed three weeks ago, but after the operation an infection flared up, Lily said.

Surgery could have removed the infection but was deemed too risky, so Lily was now on a course of antibiotics that would hopefully get it under control, she said.

"The doctor made it quite clear that it could damage my organs if they cut me back open and fiddle with everything again," she said.

The treatment decision had meant she was in the midst of a waiting game, as the Nambour Hospital team monitored her body's response to the antibiotics.

They had said her dis-charge date was "uncertain", Lily said, so she was overjoyed to be home for Christmas.

Lily had been lying in bed on Christmas Eve when a nurse told her the good news, she said.

Her mum Jodi said she was overjoyed to have Lily home with her younger sister and brother. A nurse would make a home visit at about lunch time, and then the family would trundle off to the annual family Christmas lunch at Lily's aunty and uncle's house, she said.

"She was very worried that she was going to miss out on her uncle's trifle," Jodi said.
