Local shops provide
IF YOU walk through the main street of Murgon, you will have a hard time spotting any empty stores.
As extra encouragement to shop locally this Christmas, Murgon business owners and community members have pulled together the Try Local - Be Surprised campaign.
The Try Local campaign will put shoppers in the running to win a share of $6000 in prizes for every purchase worth more than $10 in participating stores.
Murgon RSL manager Gavin Cleary, a major sponsor, strongly believes in the concept following the success of a similar campaign in Toowoomba.
"I know the success of the Toowoomba campaign, and there was a definite increase in local business," he said.
Mr Cleary said although Murgon business owners were finding it tough, buying locally was a life saver.
"The more people who buy local, the less chance small businesses go broke," Mr Cleary said.
"It is tough, which is why we decided to support the campaign."
Putting his words into action, the RSL club reinvests into Murgon in a number of ways.
"I know the club has always bought local. Food we certainly buy from locals," Mr Cleary said.
"Most of my staff rent through the local real estate, too."
Murgon Real Estate manager Margaret Long said Lamb St had everything people could want, and gave the town an air of confidence.
"We've had four or five businesses that started this year in the main street, which goes to show there is a huge amount of confidence in the area.
"There is very little we can't do, apart from getting your eyes tested."
For everything else, there's Lamb St.
Draws will be announced throughout December, up until Christmas Eve.
