Logan couple arrested over alleged assault of baby

A COUPLE in their twenties have been arrested in relation to the alleged assault of a 13-day-old baby boy. 

It is alleged that the baby was taken to a Gold Coast University Hospital in October last year with significant head injuries which were considered life threatening.

The child survived but sustained brain damage.

A 24-year-old woman and 28-year-old man, both from Logan, have been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to an infant.

The pair are due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

Detective Acting Inspector Greg Aubort of the Gold Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit said the arrest was the culmination of a significant and protracted major investigation leading to today's charges.

"While this matter is now before the courts and further specifics are not available it is important to recognise that all people who have care of a child have a responsibility for their protection under law,"  Detective Acting Inspector Aubort said.

"It is also important that we as members of our community and families remain vigilant to indicators of child abuse and take action to protect vulnerable children in our community," 

Investigations are continuing.
