Major permanent changes to Bruce Hwy, Sunshine Mwy

THE Department of Transport and Main Roads advises that the Sunshine Motorway eastbound access to the southbound Bruce Highway entry ramp will be permanently closed from tomorrow.

As part of the Bruce Highway upgrade - Caloundra Rd to Sunshine Motorway, the Sunshine Motorway interchange will be totally reconfigured.

The permanent closure of this access is one of the first steps in establishing the construction site for the upgrade of the Sunshine Motorway interchange, and is required for safety reasons.

Roadside barriers will be installed at night in this area to safely separate road users and roadworkers.

The position of the barriers will mean that the right turn movement from the Sunshine Motorway (eastbound) to the southbound Bruce Highway entry ramp and merging lanes at the ramp will be removed.

Motorists can still access the Bruce Highway southbound by using alternative routes such as the Sippy Downs interchange.

On completion of construction local traffic from Wilson and Cunning roads will travel on the western service road to access the Bruce Highway southbound.

One of the key safety improvements of the project is the removal of the intersection at the northbound Bruce Highway access ramps to and from the Sunshine Motorway near Wilson Road.

The intersection will be replaced with a new free-flowing, grade separated ramp to significantly improve safety for northbound motorists entering and exiting the Bruce Highway.

Road users are encouraged to subscribe for updates via the project webpage to stay up-to-date on planned works.

Wide load operators are advised that restrictions are in place for wide loads travelling through the project site during the construction.

Construction is expected to be complete by late 2020, weather permitting.

The upgrade is vital for the continued development of the Sunshine Coast, and with its increased capacity, the highway will provide safer and more efficient travel for people and industry along this stretch.

It will also cater for one-in-100 year flood events and separate long distance traffic from local traffic movements, allowing the highway to function as a high-speed, high-volume corridor.

The speed limit on the upgraded highway will be returned to 110 kmh.
