Making sense of style

When designing or styling a home, it is vital to take into consideration our senses.

This is where style meets substance. There's even a word that describes this philosophy - biophilic.

A biophilic approach to design assumes that through our senses we are drawn to nature and connection.

When our senses are considered, our mood is uplifted and we simply feel better.

One of the most pleasing visuals for the human eye is symmetry, something feng shui masters have long understood.

Where possible, style and accessorise in pairs such as matching bedside tables and lamps.

The balance of pairs also brings harmony to a space.

In terms of smell, there is a reason why a coffee pot is brewing on the stove or fragrant flowers are on display when a home for sale is open for inspection.

These smells evoke a 'welcome home' message to the brain.

Another example of feng shui design is the use of water in a living space.

Flowing water brings a relaxing sound to a space.

Water features, a fish tank or a garden pond all add to the environment.

Touch is easy to incorporate.

Lush velvet soft furnishings, faux skins and furs, cashmere throws and plush carpets and rugs all add softness to surrounds.
