Man, 37, accused of multiple counts of rape, sexual assault

A MAN accused of multiple rapes and child sex offences has been granted bail in the Maryborough Magistrates Court.

The 37-year-old man, who had been in police custody, was quiet throughout Monday's proceedings as the court heard his charges: two counts of rape, two of sexual assault, two of indecent treatment of children under 16 and one of exposing a child under 16 to indecent treatment.

The defendant, who appeared to have bruising to his face, also faces two counts of contravention of a domestic violence order.

His lawyer Travis George said that although no grant of bail was risk-free, the man had a limited criminal history and had lived at the same address for 10 years.

Mr George said it could take months for his client's case to come to trial and the man hoped to live with his parents in New South Wales.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kathryn Stagoll objected to bail, saying the defendant was a flight risk.

She said it was "highly likely" he would return to New South Wales and possibly fail to appear later in the Maryborough court.

Magistrate Graham Hillan granted bail on the condition he live with his parents and report to the police every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

"You are to have no contact either directly or indirectly with the complainants or their families," he said.

The man, who cannot be named, is due to appear in court again on October 29 for a committal mention.
