Man airlifted from dam construction site
A MAN was airlifted to hospital on Thursday morning following an accident at the Boondooma Dam spillway repairs construction site.
The Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter airlifted the 33-year-old man after he was pushed by a 7 tonne air compressor onto a structure of reinforcement steel. The structure then rolled over him causing lower limb injuries.
A LifeFlight spokesperson said the crew was tasked at 7.18 am to Boondooma Dam. The Elliot Heads man was working at the site when the air compressor rolled.
Upon arrival the LifeFlight critical care doctor treated the patient for lower limb injuries until the paramedics from the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) arrived.
The man was then flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
A spokesperson for SunWater, which operates Boondooma Dam, said site personnel responded immediately and the man was airlifted to Sunshine Coast hospital. A second man was taken to hospital with shock.
"The families of the two men taken to hospital have been notified of the incident,” the spokesperson said.
"All work was stopped on-site immediately and the site has been shut-down for investigation.
"SunWater takes workplace health and safety seriously and will work closely with the on-site Principal Contractor and Worksafe Queensland to investigate the incident.”
A Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Spokesperson said the safety organisation was conducting initial inquiries in to the accident.
