Daniel Holdom charged with murder of Khandalyce Pearce

UPDATE: THE man accused of killing Karlie Pearce-Stevenson has now also been charged with the murder of her daughter Khandalyce Kiara Pearce.

Daniel Holdom, 41, was taken into custody earlier today.

The decomposed remains of Khandalyce, 2, were discovered near a suitcase alongside the Karoonda Highway in South Australia's Murray Mallee earlier this year.

The remains were discovered more than 1000km away from where her mother's remains were found.

Ms Pearce-Stevenson's bones were found in the Belanglo State Forest in 2010.

When police charged Mr Holdom in October, police revealed that her Ms Pearce-Stevenson's band cards had been used hundreds of times, and that she was impersonated to give the impression the woman was still alive.

Both Khandalyce and her mother were reported missing in the Northern Territory in 2009 but police said that report was later withdrawn.

This afternoon Commissioner for Victims' Rights Michael O'Connell read a statement from Karlie and Khandalyce's family. He said the charges were welcome news.

"Those who love Khandalyce want her killer brought to account for such a despicable crime. It is also welcome because up until now, Khandalyce's grandfather has worried that somewhere there was a child killer or killers at large, so that other children might not be safe," Commissioner O'Connell said.

"They are thankful that they may now begin to get answers to questions that have haunted them, not only in the context of Karlie and Khandalyce as missing persons but also as victims of alleged murders.

"This will never bring closure to them and anyone who has had like experiences or been bereaved by an unexpected death, in this case multiple deaths - closure never comes. It is a sentence for life.

"One hopes that through learning more about what happened to their loved ones, they will begin to be able to cope a little more with their own plights and become more aware of what actually happened."
