Man bitten on leg by a dingo on Fraser Island

TWO high-risk interactions involving dingoes have been reported on Fraser Island in the past month, including one incident where a man was bitten on the leg.

A spokeswoman from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service said at least one of the interactions may have been avoided if the dingo safety message had been followed by the male visitor to the island who was bitten on the leg.

She said the visitor was approached by three dingoes on February 4 while he was walking alone, when one of the dingoes lunged and bit him on the back of his leg.

"This interaction may have been avoided if dingo safety advice was followed," the spokeswoman said.

The second incident happened on February 11 when a male visitor was approached aggressively by a dingo while he was worming.

The man was forced into the ocean for 30 minutes in an attempt to escape the dingo, which was lunging at him repeatedly.

The spokeswoman said the continuing management actions include beach patrols focusing on the "be dingo-safe" education program and encouraging compliance relevant to dingo safety.

"Temporary dangerous dingo signage has also been installed at strategic locations on the island," she said.
